Vision

Vision in business has a specific meaning which is different from everyday use. How well do you know the answers to the following questions:-

  • Where do you want your business to be in five years time?
  • If you asked the same question to your staff would they give the same answer?
  • If you asked your most important customer the same question about your business would they give the same answer?
  • As the market changes over the next five years how achievable is your vision?
  • What is your main competitor planning to do over the next five years?
  • What will you do when a new competitor, with a new approach enters the market?

If you have to sit and think about those answers it is probable that your vision is not as effective as it needs to be.

Ask yourself some more fundamental questions:-

  • Why does your company exist?
  • Does your company do anything useful apart from providing you with income?
  • If your company ceased to exist would anyone miss it?

Too many companies produce a Vision Statement which is of little practical use and, as a demonstration of how useless it is they have it framed and stuck on the wall. That way it is safely out of the way and does not interfere with nor affect what the company actually does every day.
